LED in the Home

Although LED lighting is becoming the light source of choice for commercial buildings and in the workplace for America, it is also now a great alternative in the home.

Most Americans are now using either incandescent or fluorescent tubes and bulbs to light their homes.  Switching to LED bulbs and tubes will instantly produce not only a better light source, but will decrease the monthly utility bill, and at the same time, help save the planet.

Let’s take a look at how that may be achieved…

Changing the typical incandescent light bulb to the LED equivalent will reduce the wattage consumption from, as an example, 60 watts down to 6 watts for an LED.  In simple terms you can run 10 LEDs for the electrical cost of 1 incandescent bulb!

Another easy retrofit is to remove your old ceiling down lights (sometimes referred to as “canned lights”) and replace them with Green Vision LED PAR 20, 30 or 38 bulbs. Typically the old incandescent bulb is at least 50 to 75 watts.  Once again the replacement LED ranges from 9 to 13 watts.  Look around in your home to see if you have these types of lamps…how many are there?  Multiply the bulb count by the wattage, and you might be surprised at just how much energy is consumed every time you flip on a switch.

LEDs are safe and recyclable

In an attempt to reduce their energy costs, many Americans have turned to compact fluorescent lamps or CFLs. Although this did achieve some desired savings, it also introduced some undesirable elements into the home.  All fluorescent tubes or bulbs contain harmful trace amounts of mercury, and if broken, great care must be exercised in the clean up. The EPA has strict guidelines on clean up, including immediate room ventilation.  When disposing of the broken or failed unit, it should not be thrown in the trash.  You should check with your local recycling facility to get their recommendations on how to safely dispose of CFLs.  On the other hand, LEDs do not contain mercury or lead, and can be recycled.

More LED Advantages

Of course, one other major advantage of an LED is that its life expectancy is many times longer than the current lighting choices.  Many LED lights have a 50,000 hour life expectancy!  When you consider the amount of times one would have to change the existing bulbs and tubes, you can see how this would add up.

When you consider that the majority of MR16 bulbs are halogen and consume anywhere from 35 to 70+ watts, the savings using LEDs are even more pronounced.  Halogen lights also produce an incredible amount of heat on the front surface, temperatures can often be in excess of 180 degrees.  Not the best choice on hot summer nights!  The LED MR16 records very low heat, just a few degrees warmer than the surrounding surfaces, making it an ideal choice when replacing halogen bulbs.

One of the fun things about LEDs in the home is that many bulbs can be controlled in a magnitude of colors.  Imagine flipping on the light switch, and flooding a wall or room in warms colors. You can set a relaxing mood, or even liven up a room with beautiful color!
We have MR16 spot lights with a remote control that allows you to change colors to a steady color of choice, or simply click on a color smoothing mode and watch the colors change gradually and softly.  A dimming feature lets you fade the brightness to suit the occasion.  Amazingly, when fully dimmed, the wattage consumption is less than 1 watt!

When you get to think about it, switching to LED is a very compelling idea.
